Pupil Welfare & Development

The mission of the Pupil Welfare and Development (PWD) programme is to nurture pupils' potential through the provision of opportunities for their social, moral, and emotional development in a caring and conducive environment.

Central to the PWD Programme is the Character Development Programme. The school started with the Life Enrichment (LE) Programme which was implemented in 1989, through Personal-social-emotional (PSE) lessons that stretched across all five levels in the school.  Supporting programmes were built around the LE Programme. In 2006, the LE and CME (Civics and Moral Education) lessons were integrated and named SEL (Social-Emotional Learning). The review team took care to infuse the five Social-emotional competencies into this curriculum. A rigorous review of the curriculum took place at the end of 2006 and refinements were made with inputs from the R3ICH packages for the Lower Secondary curriculum. The revised curriculum for 2007 was renamed Self and Beyond. In 2007, the curriculum was reviewed and themes are now used to integrate the different aspects of social and emotional competencies.

In the SEL curriculum, pupils are taught various forms of coping skills. They are also encouraged to explore and reflect on personal feelings and values.

Objectives of the SEL Curriculum
1. to foster in pupils greater self‑awareness and social awareness;
2. to develop skills in self‑management, relationship management and responsible decision making;
3. to assist pupils to make informed educational career decisions and better life choices;
4. to develop reflective thinkers;
5. to facilitate inculcation of school’s core values: responsibility, respect, compassion, discipline, perseverance and integrity;
6. to develop emotional intelligence

The restoratative approach to Discipline was adopted in 1991. The Beta/Counselling Form aims to get pupils to be accountable for their behaviour and conduct. The pupils are guided to reflect on their misbehaviour and are guided to correct themselves.

External agencies are called upon to conduct workshops on human sexuality as well as personal grooming and social etiquette. Career talks and visits are organised to provide pupils with Educational Career Guidance. The OSCAR computer software provides an opportunity for pupils to explore vocational choices and to match them with their interests and abilities.

Under the guidance of the form teachers, in partnership with the respective Heads of Level, Class Committees learn to manage their own classes better in four areas – discipline, maintenance, studies and welfare. Class spirit is fostered through working as an organised class.

Objectives of the Community Engagement Programme

At the end of their secondary education, every BoonLayian will be able to:

1. contribute to the community, socially and morally
2. be connected to local and external social agencies, community resources such as public libraries and community centres, cultural centres such as Taman Warisan, Chinatown Heritage Centre, and Esplanade
3. organize and execute service learning projects
4. clock in at least 100 CIP hours

Community Service takes many forms – gardening within school, the school’s annual charity bazaar, newspaper collection for recycling, beach cleaning and flag-selling are some examples. We have also forged partnerships with external agencies / institutions like St. Joseph’s Home (adopted since 2003), Bukit Batok Home for the Aged (since 2007), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) in our endeavour to engage our pupils in meaningful and authentic community work. We have been partnering South-west Central Development Committee (SWCDC) for the Youth Excellence at Heartlands (YEAH) CIP programme and the Green Schools at SWCDC since 2007. As part of the Green Schools at SWCDC programme, our school took part in the Happy Toilet programme. We won a Bronze award in 2007 and a Silver award in 2008.

The Counselling Room allows our school’s Full-Time school counsellor (FTSC) and Part-Time school counsellor (PTSC) privacy and confidentiality in counselling pupils.  Pupils who have problems are encouraged to approach their family, friends, any teacher or the Principal.

Parents play an important role in the education of their children. For this reason, Parent-Teacher Interaction (PTI) sessions have been organised since 1989, to allow for discussions on the progress of the pupils.

Leadership for Every BoonLayian

In Boon Lay Secondary School, our vision is that every Boon Layian is a leader. We believe that every pupil has the potential to develop and demonstrate leadership skills over time. Nonetheless, it depends very much on the environment that he or she interacts with to be able to identify and demonstrate such qualities and abilities.

To realise this, we offer pupils avenues to explore their potential for personal growth and leadership through a range of training and opportunities within and outside school. A leader is not created overnight. Rather, the nurturance of a leader requires time. Thus, we will adopt a developmental approach towards leadership. Through this approach, our Boon Layians will leave the school as a leader, in his or her own capacity.

Main Objectives

Boon Lay’s pupil leadership programme aims to achieve the following for each Boon Layian. Each Boon Layian will be able to:

1.Communicate confidently and effectively.
2.Make informed and responsible decisions in any situation.
3.Build positive relationships with peers and the wider community.
4.Initiate, organise and implement school projects or initiatives while leading others towards a common goal.
